Commencement Ceremony Information

 

 

The Program in Criminal Justice will be hosting a Senior Recognition Ceremony, where we will be recognizing and paying tribute to each of our graduating seniors individually, as well as awarding our departmental honors. The ceremony will be held on Friday, May 15, 2020; immediately following will be a reception where light refreshments will be served.  The ceremony is open to graduating seniors who have completed the Criminal Justice major requirements and have registered with S.A.S. for a graduation date of January 2020, May 2020, or August 2020.

We are requiring advanced RSVP for all seniors interested in attending the ceremony.  Students must fill out and submit the RSVP Form by Monday, April 20, 2020 to This email address is being protected from spambots. Program

  • The ceremony will begin promptly at 6:30pm, and will conclude at approximately 8:00pm; there will be a desserts reception immediately following in the College Avenue Gymnasium Annex, where light refreshments will be served. 
  • Graduates must arrive between 5:45pm and 6:00pm in the College Avenue Gymnasium Annex where they will need to check in.
  • Graduates must wear formal attire: no jeans, flip flops, sneakers, shorts, or t-shirts will be permitted.  Students should not wear their S.A.S. regalia to this ceremony.
  • During the ceremony, each graduate will be recognized.  Departmental honors will be awarded at that time.

Guests

  • Doors to the main gymnasium entrance will open at 5:45pm. No guests are permitted in the Annex entrance, reserved for graduating seniors only.  No guests are permitted in the back entrance of the gymnasium.
  • Seating is on a first come, first served basis.
  • All guests will be seated on the main floor of the College Avenue Gymnasium.
  • If you have a guest requiring handicapped seating due to wheelchair use, walker use, the use of a breathing apparatus/oxygen tank, or is deaf, graduates must include this information on the RSVP Form. There will be handicapped seating on a first come, first served basis. The individual requiring handicap seating is allowed 1 guest to accompany them: all other guests of the graduate must sit in the general audience seating areas. When a guest requiring handicap seating arrives to the College Avenue Gymnasium, he/she must check in with a staff member at the entrance doors of the gym.  A staff member will seat all guests requiring handicapped seating.
  • There is no separate parking available for handicapped guests. Guests with mobility issues may be dropped off at the front entrance to the College Avenue Gymnasium, and the driver can then park in one of the suggested parking lots.

  • There will be a bag check upon entering College Avenue Gymnasium for all guests—no exceptions. Glass bottles are not permitted. No open beverage containers are permitted. Only water bottles with a tight lid are permissible.
  • Balloons are strictly prohibited and will be confiscated.
  • Noise makers of any kind are strictly prohibited and will be confiscated.
  • Strollers are allowed, but must be left in the lobby before entering the gym area during the event. Rutgers and the Program in Criminal Justice are not responsible for any theft or loss of items left unattended.

  • There is no need to obtain a Commencement parking pass for this event. Parking passes are only necessary for events held on Sunday (day of the main School of Arts and Sciences ceremony).

  • GradImages is the official photographer for commencement and senior ceremonies at Rutgers. Proofs will be available after the ceremony. You may also provide them with email addresses up to six friends and family members to allow them to celebrate in your accomplishment.
  • Photographers from GradImages will be present at the C.J. Senior Recognition Ceremony to take photographs during the ceremony, and will take a few photographs of each graduate as he/she walks across the stage when his/her name is called.
  • In order to notify you when your images are available, GradImages sends emails and mails paper proofs, along with optional text message notifications. Your information is never shared and privacy is guaranteed. Honors and Awards

  • Students receiving top marks in the requirements to complete the Criminal Justice major are eligible to receive honors. C.J. honors are calculated based on courses that count toward the Criminal Justice major only—these honors are separate from S.A.S. honors.
  • Students who receive a major GPA of 3.57 to 3.76 qualify for Honors in the major.
  • Students who receive a major GPA of 3.77 to 3.99 qualify for High Honors.
  • Students who receive a major GPA of 4.0 qualify for Highest Honors.
  • The Program in Criminal Justice offers the Albert Roberts Scholar Award to those students with outstanding and uncommon academic performance. In order to qualify for this award, students must receive a minimum 3.8 GPA in the major. This award remembers longtime faculty member Dr. Al Roberts, a scholar of victimology who had exemplary commitment to undergraduate education.
